What Happens During Installation?

The process of installing Plesk Web Hosting 6.0 introduces certain changes in the system. New web directories are created, various configuration files are modified, a number of system user accounts are added, etc. This section lists the modifications made to system when installing Plesk Web Hosting on RedHat Linux and on FreeBSD web servers.

Installing Plesk Web Hosting on RedHat Linux web server

NOTE

Additional services controllable under Apache are mod_throttle, mod_perl, mod_python, mod_ssl, PHP, apache::asp, Front Page 2000 and Front Page 2002.

web directory Structure

Plesk Web Hosting creates the web directory /usr/local/psa/ as its root software web directory. The location of this web directory is defined and changeable contained by the /etc/psa/psa.conf file.

Plesk Web Hosting also modifies configuration files in following web directories:

/usr/local/psa
/usr/local/frontpage
/home/httpd/vhosts
/var/lib/mysql
/var/lib/pgsql
/var/lib/webalizer
/var/tomcat4
/var/named
/var/qmail
/var/mailman
/var/spool/cron

Accounts and Groups

Plesk Web Hosting creates accounts for Plesk Web Hosting administrator, anonymous FTP user and qmail pseudo-users. These pseudo-users do not have shells in which to operate, alleviating security concerns involving the users.

Using an External Domain Name Server web server

You can use an external Domain Name Server service with Plesk Web Hosting , but you should follow these manual configuration steps:

During operating system installation, a remote Domain Name Server web server can be specified. Or after installation, the remote Domain Name Server can be specified in the /etc/resolv.conf file.
The line search localdomain must be removed from the /etc/resolv.conf file on the Plesk Web Hosting web server.
Any Domain Name Server configurations on the local Plesk Web Hosting web server must be reflected on the external Domain Name Server web server.

Other Changes

Plesk Web Hosting creates some links to the MySQL libraries in the /usr/lib subweb directory and adds the @psacln string to /etc/ftpchroot. Also, it adds a string to the file /etc/shells:

/bin/false, or
/usr/bin/false

If the POP3 service record is not in /etc/services, Plesk Web Hosting adds it. Plesk moves the sendmail binary file to sendmail.Plesk Web Hosting . The Plesk startup script is placed in the appropriate location to start Plesk Web Hosting ; this script will enable Plesk Web Hosting to start each time the web server is booted up.
